Christmas Eve Ice Storm"'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the South,. a freezing rain was falling, gently so none noticed, not even a mouse." Well - I first noticed upon waking about milking time, to silence from the clock radio. Hmm.. no power at milking time means milking by hand. Lucky - most of the goats are pregnant, and dried off - so only a few to milk. Trudging across the yard I saw the glow of emergency lights on in the B&B hallways. First time - glad to know they work. Breakfast for our guests? Not a problem - gas stove, full fridge/freezer, & bottled water. Heat? still OK - radiant floor heat hangs around for a day or so. Morning showers? - nope - no electricity, no pump - so no water. Called the rental store & reserved a generator for the weekend. Thus began several days of creative accommodations: as dairymen working with limited power (real dairies have BIG generators - guess we're still amateurs), and as B&B hosts with guests in town for the Christmas holidays. Fortunately, our guests were understanding - the families they were visiting didn't have power either. But with candles and oil lamps, LP Gas water heaters, some creative wiring, and lots of extension cords - we managed to all eat well, and take hot showers. Reports were that thanks to featherbeds and down comforters, our guests had never slept so well. Probably too tired to try reading by lamplight. I was. |
